The Professional Trucker Checklist

Most of us understand the overall duties that are placed on truck drivers, but sometimes their labor goes unnoticed. Trucks carry and deliver items that Americans use daily. Without them, we wouldn’t have access to some of our most used products. Have you ever thought about what it takes to join a team of professional truck drivers? Operating a truck may look simple, but several steps go into it.

The CDL Process

The first thing you must realize is that operating a delivery truck is much different than a regular 4-door sedan or SUV. Most companies require applicants to take a truck driving course if they do not already have a CDL. The length of this training can range anywhere from two weeks to a full month. During this training, you are expecting to:

  1. Pass a CDL exam for a CDL learners’ permit

  2. Get hands-on training with a CDL driver practicing operation

  3. Take the official driving exam

Once you have received your CDL, you have the freedom to branch off into just about any trucking company. With your trucking license can pursue careers like:

  • Ice road trucking

  • Car hauling

  • Owner-operator

These positions offer excellent benefits and competitive pay. There are also several jobs you can have that don’t require you to drive a truck. From tractor technicians to engineering operators, there’s a position for everyone. You don’t like driving big trucks? Try being a bus driver. Everyone has an opportunity for success and a long-lasting career within the transportation field.

With the proper training and experience on the wheel, anyone can obtain a CDL and start their career. Truck drivers are a common profession that’s always looking for new drivers. Now that you know what requirements need to be meant, you can start your trucking career in no time.
