When entering the trucking industry it's important to understand the variabilities between long and short-haul trucking. Below are some of the key differences between the two.
Long-Haul Trucking

Usually, on a long-haul, the cabs would have ample room to have snacks on board, stretch, or have a quick nap. Due to the long-distance nature of this profession, there is ample opportunity to explore the nation. Interstate travels allow for sightseeing along the way that an individual would otherwise not have a chance to experience. For their trouble, the average salary for a long-haul trucker is $43,680/year.
However, this also means that a driver would need the necessary knowledge regarding interstate regulations and laws. Those that enter this profession should be aware that solitude is one's companion on the road. Many truckers spend weeks away from their family/homes. It can cause a strain on one's relationships, but it all depends on what the situation is. Another issue is that long-term immobility promotes unhealthy habits. Heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity are common issues in long-haul truckers due to limited physical activity and prolonged unhealthy food choices.
Short-Haul Trucking

Drivers often operate smaller vehicles with multiple stops a day. They typically drive on roads in the city, with this comes a requirement of experience with driving in tight spaces and turns. Most jobs are done locally or semi-locally so familiarity with the route is a given. On average drivers earn $38,700/year.
An advantage of short-haul trucking is that most drivers are able to finish their deliveries and return home every night. This is not a luxury that long-haul truckers have. If being at home regularly is of interest, then short-haul trucking is definitely the way to go. It creates a positive work-life balance where trucking is less of a lifestyle and more like a job. There are also lower operating costs due to fewer requirements for fuel, equipment and maintenance, and food on the road.
