Tips For Running in Cities

Updated: Jul 18, 2021

While cities are some of the most thrilling places bursting with opportunity, excitement, and entertainment all at your fingertips, it can be easy to let some building blocks of your daily routine slip through the cracks such as proper eating, mental health, and arguably one of the most difficult, exercise.

Here we can learn about three key ways that you can integrate your workouts into the outdoor playground that is a city!

Make the Park your Best Friend

As you run around all day, and see millions of people around you doing the same, you need something that you can escape to, something that will be a change of pace in a sea of concrete and taxi cabs.

This place can be a park! Most cities have parks full of trees, grass, and other natural beauty in addition to trails and pavement designed for people to get active in a safe and open area. By running in a park you can get a breath of cleaner air due to all the trees that it holds, and with that comes the opportunity to clear your mind and alleviate any claustrophobia from the streets. This in turn can uplift your mental health as well as your physical health.

Plus, you can people-watch without them disappearing in the blink of an eye down the next corner.

Elevate your Daily Commute

Another large issue faced by many citizens of cities is making time for a workout. In your busy day between work, grocery shopping, family, friends, etc., the question is when to work out.

However, if you decide to swap out the subway for walking the extra 7 blocks, you will sneak in your steps and exercise without even carving out the extra time at the end of your busy day. This can also help you have some 􏰀me time􏰁, or ease into or out of your day.

Play Red Light, Green Light!

We know the streets of the city are not an optimal location for a workout, so show 'em how innovative, creative, and adaptive you are by playing Red Light, Green Light for your next workout!

To play this, you can run at green lights, and instead of pausing or jogging in place at red ones, try stretching or doing some squats or push-ups on the side of that street corner􏰂s Starbucks!

This way, you are not wasting your precious time waiting for cars and taxis to pass you by, and doing so will be giving you a HIT (High Interval Training) workout that will help you get an even better bang for your buck. Doing so is also switching up a typical routine, which can help you feel more inspired or escape a rut.

Whichever you decide to do, nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it and you can be successful in finding opportunities from hardships.
