School Districts Hoping to Receive $25 Billion For Electric Busses

As electric vehicle development continues to rise across the United States, the education system hopes to join with electric busses transporting America’s youth.

As part of Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan to revamp several of America’s working-class industries, $25 billion is being pushed to invest in electric busses in the education sector of America. With over 90% of busses in the nation used for education transportation, the legislation would use federal grant money over the next 10 years to build busses, charging stations, and pay for training. Roughly 20-25 million kids across the country use bus transportation to get to and from school.

Electric vehicles are poised to take over the future of freight and public transportation, with infrastructure being one of the largest concerns, the bill looks to be a kickstarter in providing charging networks and training for drivers.

Led by Alex Pedilla, a Democrat from California, the push also focuses on improving transportation conditions for drivers and students as most busses in the nation are outdated and produce unnecessary emissions.

“Transitioning our school bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles is an essential aspect of building equitable, sustainable infrastructure and is a wise investment in our children, our environment and our future,” Padilla said.

The bill seeks to gain 60 or more votes in order to pass through in a Senate divided 50-50 as a stand-alone bill. While the bill has earned acclaim from groups like The American Federation of Teachers and the Environmental Law & Policy Center, it still has a long way to go in order to gain approval.
